The Yardbirds
London R&B band formed in 1963. They replaced the Rolling Stones as Crawdaddy Club residents; lead guitarists were successively Eric Clapton (then Bluesbreakers/Cream), Jeff Beck (distortion experiments later cited by Gilmour and Slash), and Jimmy Page (New Yardbirds → Led Zeppelin).

Crawdaddy and Clapton
In September 1963, while the Rolling Stones toured with Bo Diddley, the Yardbirds took the Crawdaddy Club residency in Richmond. Anthony Topham was first on guitar; Eric Clapton joined at 18 the next month. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (1964) was a modest blues-standard hit. For Your Love (May 1965) moved toward pop and became a UK/US breakthrough. Clapton left for John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, later Cream.

Beck: distortion and hits
Jeff Beck replaced Clapton for the band’s strongest commercial and creative period: Heart Full of Soul, Shapes of Things, Evil Hearted You, and Yardbirds (1966; US Over Under Sideways Down). Beck’s distortion experiments were later cited as influences on Dave Gilmour and Slash.

Page, dual lead, New Yardbirds
Jimmy Page joined; Beck–Page dual-lead live sets often became contests. After a failed late-1966 US tour, Beck was fired. Their only dual-lead single was Happenings Ten Years Time Ago. The band dissolved in July 1968. Page completed Scandinavian dates as the New Yardbirds; that lineup became Led Zeppelin.

Beck after the band
Beck cut the pop single Hi Ho Silver Lining (1967) and the instrumental Beck’s Bolero. With the Jeff Beck Group he recorded Truth (1968), an early heavy-rock landmark, before that band dissolved. Later solo work ranged across Memphis soul (Rough and Ready, 1972), jazz-rock (Blow by Blow, 1975), and rockabilly (Crazy Legs, 1993). He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2009.
