Fingerstyle beside disco and hard rock
Knopfler plays without a pick: thumb and fingers split bass and melody. Early Dire Straits sat next to pub rock and AOR, not NWOBHM. Sultans of Swing (1978) is the key track—clean amp, story lyric, lead lines like horn phrases. Brothers in Arms later adds digital polish and CD-era volume; identity stays guitar craft over distortion density.

Brothers out; Clark, Lindes, Williams
Debut four: Mark and David Knopfler, Illsley, Withers. David left in 1980; Making Movies is often called their best LP. Lindes and Clark expanded the stage and studio. Love Over Gold’s long narrative tracks scaled the live show; Withers quit rather than rework arrangements. Williams (ex–Man) took drums into the Brothers in Arms era. Cross-band: Dylan’s Slow Train Coming sessions with Mark and Pick.

Brothers in Arms and the CD push
Brothers in Arms (1985) topped global charts. Philips sold the long runtime on CD without quality loss; it was among the first million-selling compact discs. On Every Street (1991) failed to match that scale. Knopfler shifted to Notting Hillbillies and solo records; Clark later toured as The Straits without him. Timing of the CD format and the album’s length is part of the sales story in the book.

After Dire Straits
Knopfler declined reunions. Solo and duo work with Atkins and Harris continued; On the Night (1993) closed the live catalog for many listeners. The Knopfleri dinosaur naming is a late cross-field footnote from fans in paleontology.
