Hub

Voice as college-rock then mass-alt face: Buck’s jangle and Stipe’s opaque-to-clear lyric arc define the band.

Born 1960. Forms R.E.M. 1980 in Athens with Buck, Mills, Berry. Murmur (1983) cites arpeggiated Rickenbacker under mumbled verse. Document → Out of Time / Automatic for the People (1991–92) open the lyric delivery for radio (Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts). Berry exits 1997; trio continues to 2011. Hub: vocal identity across indie credibility and Warner-era scale—not a guitarist hub.
