Jangle college-rock to mass alt

Buck’s Rickenbacker arpeggios and Stipe’s non-literal verses define early R.E.M., before distortion became the main alt language. Losing My Religion put a mandolin-led single on global alt radio in 1991 beside Nevermind. Everybody Hurts uses ballad dynamics without soft-loud grunge form.

Berry retired in 1997 after an aneurysm; the trio era (Up, Reveal) continued without a permanent drummer as a named bandmember. Peak citation period is Berry-era 1987–1994. Rhythm-section stability is the lineup story; there was no classic guitarist split. Four people from 1980 through Monster. Berry’s exit is the only chair change the entry dates. Vedder and Patti Smith are guests on Collapse into Now.
