Metallica vocals/rhythm-guitar pillar; downpicked riff engine and barked verse as thrash mass grammar.

Hub

Rhythm guitar + lead voice fused: Hetfield’s right hand is the band’s tempo and identity across bassists and eras.

Born 1963. Co-founds Metallica with Ulrich; Kill ’Em All → Master of Puppets locks downpicking, palm mute, and gallop figures as thrash default. Cliff Burton then Newsted then Trujillo change the low end; Hetfield/Ulrich writing core stays. Black Album (1991) scales the same right-hand attack to radio hard rock. Hub is continuity of rhythm-guitar leadership, not a revolving frontman brand.
