Pantera starts as glam metal in Texas clubs—Metal Magic through Power Metal document the pre-Anselmo era. Phil Anselmo joins in 1987; the band drops hairspray for hardcore-adjacent aggression. Cowboys from Hell (1990) is the reset: dropped D tuning, Dimebag's Dean guitar, Vinnie Paul's triggered kick.

Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuts at US #1—5 Minutes Alone and I'm Broken extend the groove approach. Strength Beyond Strength opens at extreme tempo. The band fractures after Anselmo's heroin issues and Dimebag/Rex/Vinnie side projects. Dimebag is murdered on stage in 2004. Groove metal legacy: nu-metal and metalcore cite Pantera for stop-start palm-muted riffs.
