Pantera starts as glam metal in Texas clubs—Metal Magic through Power Metal document the pre-Anselmo era. Phil Anselmo joins 1987; band drops hairspray for hardcore-adjacent aggression. Cowboys from Hell (1990) is the reset: dropped D tuning, Dimebag's Dean guitar, Vinnie Paul's triggered kick.

Vulgar Display of Power (1992) sells millions—Walk becomes the riff every guitar student learns. Mid-tempo, palm-muted, syncopated. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuts at US #1—5 Minutes Alone and I'm Broken extend the groove template. Strength Beyond Strength opens at extreme tempo. Band fractures after Anselmo's heroin issues and Dimebag/Rex/Vinnie side projects. Dimebag murdered on stage 2004. Groove metal legacy: nu-metal and metalcore cite Pantera as the stop-riff ancestor.
