Space rock to Urban Hymns
Early catalog runs long—Slide Away and A Northern Soul tracks with McCabe’s wet guitar. Urban Hymns compresses similar melancholy into radio length with string loops and piano ballads. Bitter Sweet Symphony’s Oldham sample is both a production fact and a legal footnote.

McCabe exit and Urban Hymns reunion
Classic four: Ashcroft vocal, McCabe guitar wash, Jones bass, Salisbury drums. McCabe leaves in 1995; returns for Urban Hymns after an Ashcroft/Jones/Salisbury gap. Simon Tong joins guitar/keys on the peak five-piece. The 2007 reunion restores the four names. They stop again in August 2009. Leckie links the first album to The Stone Roses. Tong is the shared guitarist with Blur. The Stones sample on Bitter Sweet Symphony is the publishing node.

Late Britpop and later ballad writing
Urban Hymns marks Britpop’s 1997 commercial peak with mid-tempo strings and mortality lyrics, distinct from Oasis-style laddish anthems. Early Coldplay piano ballads are often compared to this Ashcroft/McCabe approach. Bitter Sweet Symphony remains a sampling-rights case study beside its chart history.
