Funk bass on alt-rock radio

Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) puts slap bass and punk-funk rhythm on MTV beside grunge. Rick Rubin’s dry mix keeps drums forward; Frusciante’s clean-to-crunch toggles define the guitar chair. Californication (1999) shows the same four can carry ballad singles without losing the pocket. On the 1990s map, RHCP are LA funk-hard rock next to Seattle quiet-loud.

Frusciante cycles and fixed rhythm section

Kiedis and Flea stay from 1983. Frusciante enters in 1988, leaves after Blood Sugar, returns for Californication through By the Way. Chad Smith holds drums from 1988. Peak citation is the Rubin / Frusciante / Smith quartet. Navarro and later guitarists mark other chapters; catalog memory stays on the Frusciante funk-alt records. The 1984 record uses Sherman and Martinez. Slovak and Irons were still in What Is This?. After Slovak’s death the stable pair is Frusciante and Smith, with Navarro’s album in between and Klinghoffer after Frusciante’s later exit.

Funk pocket in later alt and stadium rock

Foo Fighters and Muse cite the melodic hard-rock side; slap bass as a lead instrument appears on 2000s festival sets. Less Seattle grunge writing than peers—more LA punk-funk and Van Halen–style chord moves. Influence shows in slap-bass-forward rock radio and in bands that copy Flea’s register without Kiedis’s rap-flow.
