Nevermind and US rock radio, 1991

After Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nevermind moved from college and alternative playlists onto mainstream MTV and rock radio. The records pair punk roughness with hard-rock weight. Press and videos from the period often show the band rejecting standard rock-star presentation.

Bleach lineup and the Grohl trio

Bleach documents the Sub Pop years with Chad Channing on drums. Cobain, Novoselic, and Grohl are the lineup most cited for Nevermind and In Utero. Earlier drummers matter to the early catalog; MTV-scale memory centers on Grohl’s kit from 1990–94. The pre-Grohl drum chair changes four times. Everman moves on to Soundgarden’s bass. Goldston plays cello on the Unplugged session.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Quiet-loud verse/chorus writing was already familiar from acts such as the Pixies. MTV and rock radio amplified this track until it became a fixed 1991 reference. The video’s cheerleader satire is part of the media event. The musical pivot is the drop into distortion on the chorus.

Melody, bass, and kick

Cobain’s melodies sit under fuzz and power chords. Novoselic’s bass is melodic and wide in the mix. Grohl’s kick often marks section changes like a hard cut. Later bands frequently copy the quiet-loud outline. Public refusal of rock-star presentation is harder to copy as a method.
