One-man demo to band
Grohl records the Foo Fighters debut alone in Seattle after Nirvana ends. This Is a Call and Big Me show melodic hooks over punk-adjacent energy. Pat Smear (ex-Nirvana touring guitarist) and Nate Mendel (Sunny Day Real Estate) join for touring. Grohl still writes and often records core tracks himself. Foo Fighters (1995) establishes the template: verse melody, chorus distortion, no grunge costume.

Taylor Hawkins replaces William Goldsmith on drums mid-sessions. Everlong, Monkey Wrench, and My Hero define the loud-quiet FM standard. Grohl and producer Gil Norton push guitar layering; Mendel's bass locks Hawkins' open hi-hat groove. Album sells millions—cements Grohl as frontman, not just Nirvana drummer.

Chris Shiflett joins 1999; There Is Nothing Left to Lose through Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace stack radio rock with Grohl's producer credit on QOTSA records. Grohl drums on Queens of the Stone Age's Songs for the Deaf (2002); seeds Them Crooked Vultures (2009) with Homme and John Paul Jones. Best of You and The Pretender prove sustained arena draw two decades post-Nirvana.
