From one-man demo to band
After Nirvana ended, Grohl recorded the Foo Fighters debut alone in Seattle. This Is a Call and Big Me place melodic hooks over punk-adjacent energy. Pat Smear (ex-Nirvana touring guitar) and Nate Mendel (Sunny Day Real Estate) joined for touring. Grohl still wrote and often recorded core tracks himself. Foo Fighters (1995) sets the early pattern: verse melody, chorus distortion, without grunge costume.

The Colour and the Shape
Taylor Hawkins replaced William Goldsmith on drums mid-sessions. Everlong, Monkey Wrench, and My Hero define the quiet-loud FM face of the album. Grohl and producer Gil Norton push guitar layering; Mendel’s bass locks to Hawkins’ open hi-hat groove. Multi-million sales fixed Grohl as a frontman, not only as Nirvana’s drummer. Sunny Day Real Estate sent Mendel and Goldsmith. Scream sent Franz Stahl for a short guitar stint. Hawkins arrived from Morissette’s touring band.

Stadium years and side projects
Chris Shiflett joined in 1999. There Is Nothing Left to Lose through Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace keep radio-rock scale. Grohl also produced Queens of the Stone Age records and drummed on Songs for the Deaf (2002). Them Crooked Vultures (2009) with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones is the main side-project node. Best of You and The Pretender show arena draw two decades after Nirvana.
