Harmony vocals on metal-leaning grunge
Facelift (1990) put Alice in Chains on MTV beside Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Cantrell and Staley’s stacked thirds differ from Cobain’s single-line melody; talk-box and drop-D riffs mark the metal edge. Dirt (1992) consolidates Rooster, Them Bones, and Would?—slow tempos and odd meters in one album cycle.

Staley years and DuVall return
Peak four: Staley, Cantrell, Kinney, and Starr on Facelift; Mike Inez replaces Starr for Dirt and Jar of Flies. Staley’s last recordings taper in the mid-1990s; William DuVall joins for 2006 reunion shows. Catalog citation still centers Staley/Cantrell harmony on Dirt. The DuVall chapter extends touring more than first-citation radio memory. The Dirt tour swapped Starr for Mike Inez. After Staley’s death the 2005 restart used guest singers, then William DuVall.

Twin vocals and down-tuned weight
Cantrell’s riff writing draws on Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin; Van Halen-style harmonics appear in Facelift leads. Tool and Deftones later take down-tuned weight and patient dynamics. What travels most clearly is harmony stacked over sludge-tempo riffs.
